Doors

Posted on May 29, 2018 at 9:32 PM Comments comments (0)
door is a moving mechanism used to block off and allow access to an entrance to a building, room or vehicle. Doors normally consist of one or two solid panels, with or without windows, that swing on hinges horizontally. These hinges are attached to the door's edge but there are also doors that slide, fold or spin. The main purpose of a door is to control access.
Doors are significant in preventing the spread of fire and act as a barrier to noise. Many doors are equipped with locks to allow entrance to certain people and keep out others.
When opened, doors can allow almost anything to pass through. The door is used to control the physical atmosphere within a space by enclosing the air drafts, so that interiors may be more effectively heated or cooled. When closed, a door normally impedes the transfer of air from one side to the other. Similar structures that do allow air to be transferred through some form of a grillwork are called gates.
Doors may have an aesthetic purpose in creating an impression of what lies beyond; for example, keeping administrative and factory areas of a building separate. In less formal settings, doors may also be seen as a sign of the desire for privacy. As a form of courtesy and civility, people often knock before opening a door and entering a room. Some doors even have designated "knockers."
Doors are often symbolically endowed with ritualistic purposes. For example, being granted access to a door, including the guarding or receiving of the key to that door, may have special significance. Similarly, doors and doorways frequently appear in literature and the arts in metaphorical or allegorical context, often as a portent of change.

Tempered glass

Posted on May 7, 2018 at 9:06 PM Comments comments (0)
I think it’s very important to know what type of glass you want or possibly need (depending on the situation). That is what I found this brief article reviewing the characteristics of tempered safety glass.

Tempered  glass is physically and thermally stronger than normal glass. The greater contraction of the inner layer during manufacturing induces compressive stresses in the surface of the glass balanced by tensile stresses in the body of the glass. For glass to be considered toughened, this compressive stress on the surface of the glass should be a minimum of 69 megapascals (10,000 psi). For it to be considered safety glass, the surface compressive stress should exceed 100 megapascals (15,000 psi). As a result of the increased surface stress, if the glass is ever broken it only breaks into small circular pieces as opposed tolarge jjagged shards. This characteristic makes tempered glass safe for high-pressure and explosion proof applications.
It is this compressive stress that gives the toughened glass increased strength. This is because annealed glass, which has almost no internal stress, usually forms microscopic crackson the surface, and any applied tension gets magnified at the surface, reducing the applied tension needed to propagate the crack. Once it starts propagating, tension gets magnified even more easily, causing it to propagate at the speed of sound in the material. Consequently, annealed glass is fragile and breaks into irregular and large sharp pieces. Any cutting or grinding must be done prior to tempering. Cutting, grinding, and sharp impacts after tempering will cause the glass to fracture.
The strain pattern resulting from tempering can be observed with polarized light or by using a pair of polarizing sun glasses.

Commercials

Today we had our first commercial shot which will launch in a few days. It was pretty fun and interesting going through scripts and different action shots to see some of our capabilities. It took some time just getting some of the different shots but now the hard work begins for our filmmaker. He’ll be taking all of our footage today and doing some editing to make everything look and sound great! It’s definitely a strange feeling when you put yourself on camera for what could potentially be the entire world to watch (highly exaggerated, I know lol). It leaves you feeling very vulnerable on camera. Put me on a job site and I’ll have everything under control, put me in front of a camera and I realize that I was never meant to be an actor. Either way I’ll be working on it so I feel more confident when I step in front of the camera. Pretty soon I’ll have the same confidence on the screen as I do at work. We’re the best for a reason in our industry and I want that to come across when you see me on the screen.

Commercials aside, you can have confidence when you give us a call for your new storefront, automatic door installation or service, and even your door repairs! JD Glass & Door is licensed, insured, and we have well over 100 years of combined experience. So, don’t hesitate to give us a call if you want your job done professionally, efficiently, and most importantly - the correct way the first time. Call us at 215-332-3000

Growing

Posted on April 12, 2018 at 8:38 PM Comments comments (107)
After a few years in the same location it feels like we might be ready for a move. We’ve been pressing hard and at the rate we’ve been growing it seems like we’ve magically run out of space. While it might be a bad thing for the short term, it also means we’ve gained a lot of momentum and are getting a lot of return customers for the long term. The next question will have to be to decide whether we should try to find an existing building that will accommodate us or to explore the option of possibly having a building built to fit our needs. Regardless, nothing is cheap these days so we just have to make sure that whatever we decide to do makes sense. If we decide to build we will have to make sure we build the appropriate size building because the last thing we want to do is have something built and have it made too big or too small for what we’re doing and the degree to which we want to grow. It’s definitely not easy when your company is growing but one thing I can say is that it’s definitely exciting! You never know what’s around the bend or where the next opportunity might present itself.

As far as opportunities go, now is a great time to give us a call for Tormax automatic doors, new storefront installation, glass repairs, or door repairs. JD Glass & Door will always be here to solve your problems! So, give us a call at 215-332-3000 and just watch as we exceed all of your expectations!

Flyers / sixers

Posted on April 11, 2018 at 9:45 PM Comments comments (94)
What the hell, Flyers! How are you going to give up 7 (at the moment of writing this) goals in the opener of the playoffs? We’re playing our arch rival and you guys put up a total dud. I mean, we came into the playoffs pretty hot and this is what happens. I know Pittsburgh has had our number all year but once the playoffs roll around you need to start fresh and put the best foot forward. After seeing the eagles and Villanova win it all I thought for sure that it might’ve rubbed off on them. Hopefully they turn it around for game 2 and show everyone what they’re actually made of and not the bs outing they gave tonight. I guess it’s also only game 1.... it is a seven game series after all. Maybe I shouldn’t be such a Debbie downer.

Aside from the flyers, how about the sixers absolutely killing it! In what’s looking like a potential 16 straight and 52 wins overall, they might be the biggest surprise this season. They’ve gotten consistently better with what seems like every single game. It’s really cool to watch such a young team grow and learn together throughout the season. Without bias, I honestly think the sixers will be one of the most fun teams to watch over the next few years. You literally can’t do better than embiid and Simmons as the pillars of your franchise moving forward.

But let’s get back to business here! If you’re in the market for automatic doors, a new storefront, glass repair, or door repair give JD Glass & Door a call at 215-332-3000. We will without a doubt have you covered with whatever it is that you might need. Movie suggestions

Posted on April 9, 2018 at 9:10 PM Comments comments (98)
It’s been a while since I’ve seen a movie and I definitely need some suggestions. I honestly can’t even remember what the last movie I saw was. How pathetic is that, honestly. As a grown adult I can virtually watch movies whenever the hell I want but obviously my time is spent blogging about movie suggestions rather than dragging my ass to whichever movie theater I like the most to see the newest movie. The other side to this story is that I haven’t even seen anything interesting come out in a while. I think all movies are turning into remakes or just horrible concepts ( avengers movies aside). The last stand out movie I’ve seen at the movies might of been either inception or shutter island (definitely have a man crush on Leo, he’s a stud). Actually mow that I think about it, the new Star Wars was the most recent movie I’ve seen but it’s not the new “last Jedi” one. I’m starting to hear bad things about that one though. I really hope it didn’t suck because I was totally looking forward to checking it out. Either way, something has to give with all of these subpar movies coming out. There are a ton of talented people out there wasting their skills on useless topics when they should be out there making some kick ass movies! Hopefully Hollywood gets their shit together and starts pumping out some a+ movies. In the meantime, give me some suggestions on a few movies you really enjoyed recently.

Sunday installation

Posted on April 8, 2018 at 8:46 PM Comments comments (0)
Woke up at 5:30 and brewed myself a pot of coffee. I love working on Sundays because even though I’m working, it’s still a slow paced type of day like sundays are supposed to be. Like usual, I enjoyed a few cups of joe and got myself ready to take on the day. After getting dressed I hopped in the car and was on my way to the shop. Once I arrived I grabbed myself a yogurt and had some breakfast before backing the truck out and getting ready to hit the road again to head to the city. The other great thing about Sunday work is that the highways are wide open. I literally wish everyday was a Sunday and traffic was that easy. Unfortunately for me I have to deal with B.S. Philadelphia traffic every day. So, we pull up to the job and get our area set up. We started dismantling the doors and it went pretty smooth. We unexpectedly had to break an existing piece of glass out but that also went smooth. The door frame popped right in and it was a snug fit. We barely had to shim anything! We got it all mounted and hung the doors, the lines were perfect all around! Like with most things that we do, perfection is what we strive for. And to be honest, perfection is what was delivered today. We cleaned up and it was a smooth ride back to the shop, locked up then headed home. Great day all around! So give us a call the next time you need automatic doors, a new storefront, glass repair or door repairs at 215-332-3000!

Nova

Awesome win by Villanova last night! Unfortunately for me I fell asleep within the final five minutes haha. They started out a little rough but they managed to pull it together halfway through the first half and never looked back. Like most of their games through the tournament, they look head and shoulders above their competition. Their composure was incredible - especially for being young kids. It’s amazing what can happen when you have a group of people buy into something that’s bigger than the individuals want or needs. That team was playing for each other and had fun while doing it. At the end of the day it’s just a game and that’s how they approached it. It definitely helped to keep the pressure of the moment down which allowed them to get back on track through the first half.

Jay Wright has been nothing short of phenomenal! It’s amaz what he’s been able to turn that program into. It’s always fun to see a local guy grow to be such a big name - and well deserved. I’m sure this won’t be his last one, either. With the way they’re going, I wouldn’t be surprised if they could pull off a repeat! Now that college basketball is over I’ll shit my focus over to the flyers who look to be headed into the postseason along with the sixers.

It’s definitely been a good year to be a philly sports fan! But it’s also a good time to be a store owner in Philadelphia! Because if you’re looking for a way to improve your facade, give JD Glass & Door a call at 215-332-3000! We can provide new storefronts, automatic doors, bullet proof enclosures, door service and glass repairs. Don’t forget to ask about financing!

Easter Sunday

Posted on April 2, 2018 at 9:10 PM Comments comments (0)
So, my Easter Sunday started off with me waking up at 8:30 - sleeping in - to get ready to go pick up my son. I brushed my teeth and got dressed and figured I would run across the street to rite aid to get all of the stuff for his Easter basket and to do a little Easter egg hunt for him. I’m walking out of rite aid and one of my biggest fears as I’m walking up to my truck is seeing the side of my truck smashed up (I park on the street). My biggest fear became my reality. As the curses were flying from my mouth like raindrops falling from the sky, I had to somehow find a way to track down who did it. I decided to run back into rite aid since they have a camera outside their building and what does the manager tell me - “oh, that doesn’t work”. I was pissed and knew that it was total bullshit. I mean, what type of pharmacy has broken cameras? There was no sense in arguing with the guy though. So, I walk back out to put my stuff in my truck and a guy approached me and says “is that your truck?” I’m thinking “of course it’s my truck jackass, can’t you see me cursing about it over here”. Obviously that would’ve been super rude so I kept my cool. It ended up being indirectly my lucky day; it was actually the guy who hit my truck. Not only was he a super nice dude, by the time I realized my truck was hit he had already filed the police report and made the insurance claim. We also have the same insurance company too to make the process a little easier.

Obviously it’s never ideal to have your vehicle hit or be in an accident but in his particular instance, I couldn’t have been luckier. Not only did he take care of all of those things but the major plus was the fact my son wasn’t in the car, I wasn’t in the car, the other driver didn’t get hurt and all in all it was nothing more than an inconvenience. Obviously I would rather have my truck over the Nissan Sentra that the rental company gave me but it is what it is. I couldn’t be mad because it was an “accident”. Nobody crashes into you on purpose so what’s the point in getting super upset about it. Shit happens and we move on. It’s always a good day when nobody gets hurt and I’ll be able to replace the truck soon enough.

After that we grabbed some dinner at my moms and brucie had a ton of fun. He loves going over to his grand moms to play. I’ve never seen a kid with so much energy as when he goes there haha. He slept over there since I was without a car and couldn’t take him to school the next day while I went to go grab my rental car. Now the wait is on until I find out the situation with my truck. Hopefully it’s not totaled!
