Plate glass or annealed glass are a type of glass, initially produced in flat form, commonly used for windows, glass doors, transparent walls, and windscreens. For modern architectural and automotive applications, the flat glass is sometimes bent after production of the plane sheet. Flat glass stands in contrast to container glass(used for bottles, jars, cups) and glass fibre(used for thermal insulation, in fibreglasscomposites, and optical communication).

Flat glass has a higher magnesium oxideand sodium oxide content than container glass, and a lower silica, calcium oxide, and aluminium oxide content. (From the lower soluble oxide content comes the better chemical durability of container glass against water, which is required especially for storage of beverages and food).

There are a few different types of glass for general purposes; annealed, tempered, and laminated. Depending on your situation you’ll be installing one of the types in your store or home. If you’re in need of replacement door glass you’re going to either need tempered or laminated safety glass - or polycarbonate but we’ll cover that later -for code reasons in Philadelphia. The difference with tempered safety glass is that when it breaks, it shatters into a million diamond like pieces. While all glass can be dangerous, the reason this is safer is because it eliminates the risk of you getting sliced open by a giant chunk of glass. Tempered glass breaks in the same way as the side windows of your car. Laminated safety glass does not explode in the same way as tempered. Laminated glass for standard door purposes is two pieces of 1/8” annealed Glass with a laminated film in between the two. This breaks in the same way as the windshield. For door purposes, this is a good choice because if your glass breaks in the middle of the night, the glass will stay in tact still in the door where tempered breaks to the ground and leaves your store open and vulnerable. Annealed Glass is the most dangerous which breaks in large chunks. This is an illegal option for door because of the risks of being seriously injured by large shards of broken glass.

It's Monday morning and I'll be hitting the ground running! One cup of coffee down and I'm on my way to my first meeting of the day! I'll be going over a few dimensions with the GC regarding the new storefront and door we'll be installing. He requested a single door and frame with two stationary openings in a dark bronze finish. Once up there and everything is good to go, I'll head back to the shop to begin fabricating everything so it can be ready for install later this week. 

Aside from the storefront confirmation, we had a customer call who had their door closer get ripped off of her door over the weekend. We had installed a new single door on a full surface continuous hinge a few years back and I'm glad to know that we're still how they count on for their door and window service! They're very nice people and we're always glad to help them out!

I love waking up early on Monday mornings! 5:00am rolls around and I look out of my window at the early morning sky; something about waking up while it's still dark really does it for me. After I climb out of bed I always take a walk to the coffee maker and get the morning brew going, having prepared it the night before. Then I usually grab a seat on my couch and grab a nice warm blanket and relax while I'm waiting for the coffee to finish brewing. The aroma of the hazelnut is enough to wake you up without even taking a sip! Once I hear the last few drops splash into the pot, I'll take a walk over to my fridge to grab the half and half. I personally don't use sugar because I think that the flavor of the hazelnut shouldn't be sweetened; It already has a wonderful flavor as is. Then, I sit down with my nice hot cup of coffee which is also acting as a hand warmer at this point, and relax while I take my first few sips.

After I drink my coffee, it's time to get ready for work! Washing my coffee mug and pot after I'm done is usually the first thing that I do, that way I have it ready for the following day. Then I throw on my jeans and shirt and head to the bathroom to brush my teeth. I usually scrub away for the standard two minutes suggested by dentists - between the brushing and drinking mostly water, I've managed to avoid getting any cavities - followed by a Listerine rinse. Then I make my bed, put together my breakfast a a few snacks for the day, grab my jacket and hit the road! It looks like it should be a pretty nice day out there overall! With a few glass replacements scheduled for the day, we should be busy until the end of the day. Great win by the sixers last night! It was a hard fought battle but we managed to pull it out. Big Ben with 32 and Embiid with 30. Hinkie’s vision has finally come true and the sixers are on their way to greatness! With this winning streak going on now, it will be fun to watch if Fultz can get healthy. 

Basketball aside, I’m pretty glad that all the rain we’ve been having isn’t snow. Unfortunately there won’t be any flowers following these showers.  But either way, rain or shine, JD Glass & Door will be there to solve your glass and door woes. Unfortunately the weather here today in Philadelphia has gone down hill a little bit. Yesterday it was a beautiful sunny and 75, now it's cold and rainy. Like me, you're all probably looking forward to the spring time; going for nice long walks, feeling the warmth of the sun on your skin, smelling the flowers while walking through the fields. It's a wonderfully therapeutic experience!  It's always important to find time to clear your head because it's very easy to get overwhelmed in today's world.
